Why I’m Crazy For Coconut Oil

I’ve been a huge fan of coconut oil for over 10 years now.

It’s a real staple in the BePure way of eating, we go through bucket loads of this super clean saturated fat.

This week I sat down with Steve at BePure who asked me why I’m so crazy for coconut oil…

What are 3 reasons you love coconut oil?

.

1)  It’s a really clean saturated fat without toxins, as it’s usually from an organic source.  Unlike other saturated fats where the toxins in the animal can potentially accumulate in the fat.

2) It’s a very stable fat so it’s brilliant to use in high heat cooking, chemically its stays together very nicely.

3) Being a medium chain triglyceride it’s very easy on the digestive system, which makes it very easy for your body to digest and utilize.

Apart from cooking what’s your favourite use of coconut oil?

.

Oil pulling: Which is where you put a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth, swirl it around for 10-20 minutes and then you spit it out (into a bin).

What that does is really help knock down the unfriendly bacteria that are associated with tooth decay, it also helps drain the lymphatic system and lymphatic saliva ducts into the mouth, which starts draining the lymphatic system for the jaw.

It’s really important to drain the lymphatic system for the jaw because a lot of people have root canals or minor infections in their mouth, which can have a systemic load on the whole body.  So the more we can help the lymphatic system drain out through the jaw and out through these glands the better.

It can also help people with bad breath as well.

What’s the best coconut oil to use?

The best coconut oil is cold pressed virgin organic. There are lots of these available on the market.

I’m not a fan of the deoderised versions where they’ve been heated at a low heat to take the coconut flavour away.

 

 

What else is coconut oil good for?

.

Coconut oil is great for stabilising blood sugar levels and a good source of energy.

You can add it to smoothies, to your cooking, stir-frys and baking.  This article from Wellness Mama has 101 uses for coconut oil.

It really is an all round high performer and as I said it’s a clean stable fat.  In the modern world that’s a really good thing.

 

 

Do you have any other sneaky cool uses for it?

.

To help stimulate bowel movements you can drink a tablespoon of coconut oil and a teaspoon of molasses in hot water at night.

That helps to stimulate a bowel movement in the morning.

Who would that be good for?

That would be good for most people as most people are constipated and have very slow transit times, which means food is staying in their body for too long.

I like people to be moving 30cm of fecal matter a day, so having this drink in the evening can be helpful.

 

 

You’ve been in the media talking about coconut oil recently, what was that about?

.

The Heart Foundation came out and slammed coconut oil because it was a saturated fat.

The interesting thing about that was I started looking at where they got their research from.  They used a consultant that worked for the food industry first and foremost so there’s already a biased, and the consultant they used was essentially an olive oil expert.

He had a look at the research and found a couple of studies that coconut oil raised cholesterol and so they slammed it for that reason.

But it was obvious to me when looking at the research the consultant used didn’t know the difference between good and bad cholesterol, and so what the research actually showed was that coconut oil actually raised the good cholesterol more than the bad chloesterol, which is actually beneficial to heart disease, so I wanted to let people know that through the media.

Can you eat too much coconut oil in a day?

.

I like people to eat fat generally to their macronutrient profile, so if somebodies more of a protein type sort of person then I’m very happy for them to be eating lots of fat.

If someones more of a carbohydrate type person then generally they’re not going to want too much fat anyway.

Coconut oil is generally very well tolerated because it’s a medium chain triglyceride, so its much easier for the body to break down and absorb, and generally very well tolerated by all genetic types.

 

How about a recipe?

Here’s one of our favourite recipes from my new 10 Day Clean Eating Programme.

Not only is it a delicious and nutritious twist on the old burger and chips, it uses lots of coconut oil, enjoy   : )

Ingredients (Serves 2)

500g beef or lamb mince (with a good fat content – not lean or premium mince)

1 onion finely sliced

1 egg

1-2 Tbsp. brown rice flour

3 garlic cloves crushed

1 Tbsp. fresh thyme, rosemary or mint or 2 tsp. dried thyme

1 Tbsp. tamari

1 Tbsp. whole-grain mustard

1 tsp. cumin seeds lightly dry roasted (optional)

1 tsp. chilli flakes (optional)

Unrefined sea-salt and pepper

1-2 Tbsp. coconut oil or lard for frying

Filling

4 large lettuce leaves to be used as the ‘buns’

1 grated carrot, 1/4 red onion finely sliced

1/2 grated beetroot

1 cup finely chopped leafy greens, chopped red cabbage

1 heirloom tomato sliced

Finely sliced mint and parsley or micro-greens (optional)

Sugar-free pickle or relish

Parsnip or Kumara Chips

3 large parsnips or 2 kumara peeled and cut into chips

1-2 Tbsp. coconut oil

Unrefined kelp salt and pepper

Directions

1. Heat oven to 180 degrees. Prepare the kumara or parsnip chips, par-boil in a pot for 5 minutes, strain and coat with oil in an oven-proof dish, season well with salt and pepper and bake/fan-bake for 10-20 mins. If you don’t par-boil then just bake parsnip/kumara for 45mins.

2. Put all the burger ingredients (mince, egg, rice flour, mustard, tamari, spices, salt, pepper and herbs) in a bowl and mix with your hands. Gently form mince into patties (the size you like) – don’t press the mixture together too much. Gently flatten the patties.

3. Heat the barbecue or a heavy pan with oil and then add the patties and cook for about 5 minutes each side (avoid pressing the patties down as this squeezes out the juices). As you are cooking the burgers, prepare all the vegetable fillings.

4. Assemble the burgers and serve with cooked vegetable chips and relish.

What’s the best water to drink and why?

 

With water and hydration being such an integral factor when it comes to weight loss, maintaining great energy and health…

We’ve dedicated this last week to helping people stay hydrated and drinking the best water.

In this article I’ve put together my responses to our most frequently asked questions around water and dehydration.

So grab a nice big glass of purified water, drink up and enjoy.

Why is it important to be hydrated?

 

Water and the electromagnetic relationship that water brings within your body is what helps the blood flow throughout your body.

If you imagine your cells where like a grape, you want a nice plump grape… but when you become dehydrated that grape starts shrinking up and becomes like a raisin, at that point the ability for the cell to do its job is heavily compromised.

If someone’s dehydrated they’re going to be missing out on energy production, they might think they’re hungry and be craving energy from food, which can cause us to overeat.

When you start looking at health concerns, hayfever and asthma are associated with dehydration, and then you start looking at longer-term health concerns – heart disease is directly related to dehydration.

In one study people who drank more than 5 glasses of water had less than half the risk of heart disease than people who drank under two glasses a day.

How can you test to see if you’re dehydrated?

Here’s a great little test to see if you’re dehydrated. Many people are shocked they can’t ‘pinch an inch’ on their lower spine.

If you can pinch an inch you’re above 50% hydration, if you can’t pinch an inch you’re dehydrated and need to drink more water.

The other way you can test is through a body composition machine and that measures the cellular and extra cellular hydration levels within the body.

 

So how much water should we be drinking each day?

A basic guide I recommend is 0.033 x your body weight (kg) = litres of water.

Roughly:

60 kg = 2 litres

75 kg = 2.5 litres

90 kg= 3 litres

105 kg = 3.5 litres

 

What’s the best water to drink?

 

Like all things there’s different qualities of water.

The best water to drink is pure, mineralized and slightly alkaline (read on to see how to get this water).

Most of our diet and lifestyles are slightly more acidic which can cause a whole bunch of different functions within the body to not work as well, like the digestive system and kidney function for example, so we want slightly more alkaline mineralised water.

 

Should I drink tap water?

 

Tap water’s not going to cut it.

Most tap water is going to have chlorine and fluoride, and both of these can be problematic.

Chlorine: is basically like a mild bleach that has a bad taste and has been put in water to kill any bad bacteria, and when you start drinking a lot of it, it starts killing the bacteria in your mouth and gut.

Flouride: blocks iodine in the body. With 72 pathways of iodine in the body, anywhere iodine should be doing its job you’re going to get decreased function because of the fluoride.

Water and weight loss

A few years ago when I was running two weekend seminars a month to a group of 150 people in Napier and 150 people in Havelock North, we discovered something really interesting…

The Napier group was losing a lot more weight than the Havelock North group, even though they were following the exact same 12 week programme.

It took me a while to narrow it down to the fact the fluoride in the Havelock water was affecting the weight loss results. Napiers water has much lower levels of fluoride than the water in Havelock North. We then got the Havelock group to drink filtered water and their weight loss started to improve.

So what you want to do is run your water through a filter that’s going to take away the chlorine and reduce the fluoride, then add some minerals and slightly alkalise the water.

What water filters do you recommend?

 

It took me 4 years of research to find water filters that I now use and recommend.

Depending on people’s situation we have a range to suit different lifestyles…

Is it ok to drink from plastic bottles?

 

The problem with plastic bottles is that the plastic leeches chemicals like pcb’s dioxins which are xeno-estrogenic and it mimics estrogen, and so then when you start getting too much estrogen it blocks the estrogen receptor sites which then means your body essentially becomes insulin resistant which makes it very difficult for your body to lose fat.

So I recommend once you’ve had your water filtered, you drink out of a glass bottle or a stainless steel bottle that you can take with you so you’re minimising the estrogen load…

Plastic bottles and weight loss

I did a talk about 10 years ago now at a Pilates centre just on water, and we got them drinking more water and moving away from drinking out of plastic bottles and onto drinking out of glass or stainless steel bottles. It was 59 women, and 1 guy (this was before Pilates was cool for guys)…

I spoke to the owner of the centre 6 weeks later and she said that was the biggest weight loss she’d seen in a group ever (just from drinking more water and switching to drinking out of glass or stainless steel bottles).

Fish Oil Exposed – NZ fish oil findings

We have had a lot of questions recently at BePure following media reporting based on research into Omega 3 fish oil by the University of Auckland’s Liggins Institute.

 

It is really important people know why not all fish oils are the same and why I spent three years researching pretty much everything you could ever need to know about fish oils; so I could get the highest level of quality for BePure Three fish oil.

 

The report highlighted two main concerns:

 

  1. The level of active essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA (the reason we take fish oil supplements) was, in all but three cases, much lower that stated on the bottle.

 

  1. Over half the products tested had oxidized to a level higher than the recommended limit (which had nothing to do with the best before date).

 

The study tested 36 different brands of fish oil capsules. BePure Three was not tested in the study but it is essential that you know the processes and procedures we have in place to ensure you are getting, not only the level of active ingredients we state on the bottle, but also the product is protected from oxidation and is as pure as we can possibly make it.

 

  1. Active Ingredients

 


Why do we need such a high level of active ingredients?

The benefits of taking a fish oil supplement are well known, with Omega 3 fatty acids being one of the most highly researched nutrients in the world.

Fish oil supplements have become very popular, for good reason – with every pharmacy, health food store and most supermarkets selling them. The problem is, as the study published in the journal Scientific Reports reports, many of the cheaper brands may not be providing the benefits they claim because the don’t have the concentration and stability they need.

EPA and DHA play an essential role in reducing inflammation and are the building blocks for hormones that control immune function, cell growth and normal metabolism. The health benefits of active omega 3’s for protecting against heart disease, brain health, mood, arthritis, skin, hair and eyes are incredible.

BePure Three has 1400mg of active ingredients (EPA and DHA).  You will notice that some products claim they have, for example, 1000mg of fish oil.  The label may say 1000 mg of fish oil on the front but that does not have any relation to how much active DHA and EPA is in the dosage. All it means is there is 1000 mg of fish oil (usually inactive).With recent studies highlighting many brands may not even have this amount of active ingredients.

 

How do you know the levels in BePure Three are what we say?

BePure has specification testing from the manufacturer, which guarantees that the amount of fish oil we state in BePure Three is actually what is in the bottle.

 

  1. Oxidation

 

Research during the recent study also found in over half of the products tested, the oil had oxidised to a level higher than the recommended limit, meaning the oil was turning rancid or already off.

We know certain brands of fish oil are processed at high heats (because I was offered this form of processing), which causes oxidization of ingredients, leading to increased inflammation in the body and risk of disease.

BePure has strict low temperature, oxygen-free processing – essential to prevent oxidation (rancidity) in our fish oil.  Brands that follow this process will include details of molecular distillation on the bottle.

 

Fish oil can be tested for rancidity after production but what is to stop it going rancid on its journey to you?

Natural vitamin E is a great antioxidant for preserving freshness as well as being essential for your health.  BePure Three Fish Oil contains 60 I.U. of Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) per serving to stop oxidation in the capsule.

Apart from vitamin E, BePure Three has a natural coating protecting it from light and therefore oxidation once it leaves the factory. I have, as an extra precaution, added a small amount of Iron to the capsule to protect the oil from light (you will notice the orange colour).

 

How long does BePure Three sit on the shelf?

The turn over at BePure is very quick, so our customers should consume their product within three months, provided they use it as soon as they get it.

 

Where does BePure source fish from?

 The media and research reported that the majority of fish oils were sourced from South American deep-sea-fish.

BePure THREE is made in NZ from small fish caught wild in the pacific. This is important to ensure the low level of toxic metals in BePure Three…

 

Heavy Metals

When I began my research into fish oil for the New Zealand market three years ago I was shocked to find the international levels for toxic substances were in some cases 10 times higher than the international standards in products on the NZ market.

One NZ manufacturer provided product tests from shallow water shark liver oil that contained 1mg/kg of mercury and arsenic. The international standards are less than 0.1 part per million.

This is horrifying and I am shocked this is being sold over the counter in NZ.

Mercury is a known toxic, bio-accumulative substance which can negatively affect your brain, nervous system, kidneys and an unborn baby’s brain and health.

BePure Three is molecularly distilled and third party tested to ensure virtually all environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, PCB’s and dioxins have been removed. The heavy metal levels tested in BePure Three are less than 0.01 parts per million which exceeds the international standards.

Quality brands will disclose this relevant information on the bottle.

 

So do I really need to take a fish oil with all this risk?

Omega 3 is the most highly researched nutrient in the world.

In 1989 respected medical journal ‘The Lancet’ reported a study trialing Omega 3-rich foods, during which the death rate dropped an impressive 29%.  Dr. Ralph Holman found that populations who had high levels of omega 3 in their blood were the healthiest.

Omega 3’s are essential fatty acids which means our body cannot make them but rather they have to come from a food or supplement source.  With the modern diet being so high in pro-inflammatory omega 6’s (and we now know many modern diseases stem from inflammation in the body) it is essential you get enough omega 3.

But you do need to be aware of the importance of buying a quality product that is pure, concentrated, biologically available, non-rancid fish oil, and what’s on the label matches the content in the capsule.

I fully support a call by industry for a passing of a bill that would help to ensure dietary supplements contain what they say they do. Consumers have a right to be getting what it says on the bottle.

 

Other common questions:

 

What about Omega 3 from plant seeds?

Omega 3 from plant seed oil is a type called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and is found mostly in flaxseeds and kiwifruit seeds.  The problem is ALA needs to be converted by the body to useable forms of Omega 3 – EPA and DHA (as found in fish oils, which have already been converted by the host fish).  Some people have difficulty converting ALA to EPA and DHA and therefore will benefit more from taking a high quality, concentrated, pure fish oil.

Some research suggests that only 9% of Omega 3’s from flax seeds are converted to EPA and DHA.

 

Why not eat fish?

Molecularly distilled and purified, fish oil can have high concentrations of DHA and EPA, at levels that would be difficult to obtain from eating fish.  You would have to eat 85g of fresh wild salmon everyday to get the daily serving available in BePure Three (2 capsules).

Unfortunately our oceans are not as clean as they used to be and the risk for mercury contamination is high when eating a lot of fish for concentrated Omega 3 benefits.  Getting your Omega 3’s from a quality, filtered source is possibly a safer option.

Ben Warren the ‘Body Mechanic’

This is an account of the ‘BePure Life Changing Weekend’ kindly written and sent to us by Lisa Wilkinson

 

Divine intervention, universal approval, or all my ducks in a row…..call it what you will, I was off to the Ben Warren ‘BePure Life Changing Weekend’ in Havelock North.

Just like so many people, I have a myriad of health issues I struggle with on a day-to-day basis, robbing me of my vitality. I’m no longer bullet proof (darn it!) and with that acceptance I am also no longer ignorant of the responsibility I must take for my own health.

I have been a follower of Ben’s philosophies since watching him on the 60 minutes programme a few years back. He got results, he made sense to the layman and I enjoyed his down to earth approach and plentiful You Tube videos. No hard sell, just genuine passion about sharing his wealth of knowledge to the minions out there suffering from a host of Dis-Eases.

And now I was actually going to meet this guru of mine.

I was running a little late and was the last one to arrive, (not my favourite thing to do) so I was flustered and feeling a little vulnerable when I walked in and there he was…in the flesh! He smiled, shook my hand and welcomed me as I am sure he did with every other of the 52 participants who arrived before me.

Serves me right, last seat was up the front, so I walked the gauntlet trying to look cool calm and collected and was immediately put at ease by the lovely Kelly at my table.

I remember glancing around the room and being quite surprised at the age ranges; from early 20’s to late 60’s ish. I found that very interesting and took the opportunity during a break to ask the younger participants why they were there as they were obviously in their prime. The general feedback was that they were being proactive about their health so they could maintain a full and healthy life. Wow I was impressed and hope that their positivity rubs off on their Mac eating peers!

Ben took the floor at 8.45am and the for the entire two days was the epitome of what glorious health and vitality looks like in full flight. Great product endorsement one might say!

The schedule was grueling and made Biology 101 look likes child’s play. The man is a walking talking encyclopedia, a 21st Century ‘Bach’ who took us all on a mind boggling journey of facts and figures, questionnaires to define our metabolic type, pulse taking to identify food effects and how each aspect of the self is intricately linked, Body Mind and Spirit. I kept thinking of the little ditty that went like this…the hip bones connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bones connected etc etc.

Ben skillfully mapped out the mechanics of the body from where the fuel went in and the exhaust came out, explaining in great detail how intrinsic each body system is to the next and how we can all apply this knowledge to our own health issues.

He interwove his delivery with his own personal experiences and laced his message with humor, empathy, even a little political intrigue, and an overwhelming sense of love for all.

Both days were well catered in every way; Ben fed our minds, our bodies (regularly thanks to Ben’s love of good healthy food) and interludes for some pleasant fresh air and Zen like exercise.

During both days, each person was invited to have a private 1 to 1 consult with the other specialists in the BePure team and climb aboard the Body Composition Machine. Well that sure took the wind out of my sails! I was not in good shape. I am a 53 year old in a 68 year olds body, or a 68 year old covered in a 53 year old veneer, whichever way I tried to look at it I was horrified.

Thankfully the team helped alleviate some of my worry by prescribing nutritional and emotional support, and three weeks down the track, as I pen my experience, I do believe I have made progress and am feeling more hopeful and healthy than I have in years.

I only wish I could have bottled that feeling of shock and horror so I could pop the cork and have a whiff every time I reach for that muffin, coffee or the Friday night Gin in the future. Ben recommends we find that “One Big Thing” that will keep us on track when temptation beckons, and that’s hard to do on a daily basis. He also said the best pharmacy is your body, listen carefully. I like that analogy and could simply substitute the weight of fear for self awareness?

You just can’t take shortcuts and yes ‘Good Health’ comes at a cost, but I know that I can no longer afford NOT to make the changes in myself and my environment that will support my well being for as long as I draw breath with a smile on my face and peace within.
