Green tea enhances belly fat loss!

We all know about the fantastic antioxidants found in Green Tea (that’s why I put it in my BePure ONE).

The latest research now shows that green tea can be beneficial for weight loss too! In a study of 132 overweight subjects given either green tea extract or a placebo, the green tea group had significantly improved abdominal (belly) fat loss and reduced serum triglycerides (that’s good too). [1]

It is believed that green tea promotes thermogenesis.  Thermogenesis involves your body increasing energy burning through brown fat cells – the result…More energy, feeling warmer and body fat loss! There are many foods that are thermogenic and I get into these in great detail in my BePure VIP Health Club. A study supporting this has found that green tea increased resting energy expenditure and fat oxidation – great news! [2]

I alternate between a couple of green teas – an organic gunpowder green tea and this Japanese lime green – give it a try!

A nutritonal perspective on menopause

It’s an all too common story…  modern day women appear to get hit really hard by the ravages of Menopause – recently one female client told me she had been menopausal for 10 years!  In stark contrast in tribal society’s menopause passes with no symptoms, how can this be so?


NUTRITION!  When you start to look at the causes of menopausal symptoms it becomes quite clear why…nutrition being the key (although stress has it’s factor)!


Essentially menopausal symptoms are caused by hormonal imbalance – including the three main types of oestrogen (oestradiol, oestrone and oestriol) and progesterone.


There are many reasons why these hormones become imbalanced, certainly environmental oestrogens play a role.  But, essentially it is a deficiency in nutrients required to biotransform the oestrogen into weaker/stronger forms to balance the system.

Basic nutrients like iodine, B6, B12 and folate, Vitamin D and A together with antioxidants, all assist in maintaining this balance.


Another major factor during menopause is primary sex hormone production is switched from the ovaries to the adrenal glands.  The adrenal glands are capable of this job but require a lot of nutrition.  There is a cascade of hormone production in the adrenal glands that rely on nutrients to make hormones.   The following nutrients are required: Vitamin C, E (mixed tocopherols), B3 B5, B6 and synergistic relationships with other B vitamins. magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese, selenium, molybdenum, chromium, copper and iodine.

Latest research recommends avoiding red meat…

In a recent study of red meat consumption the researchers found that women who ate the most red meat had a higher risk of stroke.  The study followed over 34,000 Swedish women and their red meat consumption.

Does this mean we should stop eating red meat???


We know from various observational studies of Native American Indians that people can be very healthy eating a diet high in red meat, some tribes of Native American Indians diet was 80% protein and fat from Buffalo – can’t get much redder meat than that!  Yet, they had no cancer and very low rates of heart disease on this native diet.  How can this be so?  The answer lies in what type of red meat you are eating…

Stroke is most commonly caused by blocked arteries in the neck.  What causes the arteries to block?  Inflammation and the persuing  healing responses (cholesterol etc), but inflammation is the root cause…so what could it be in the red meat that is causing inflammation? Let me answer this for you…


In Europe most beef is produced by supplementing feed with grains like corn.  Ruminants are evolved/designed to eat grass (which happens to be high in Omega 3’s) and cannot digest grains (which are high in omega 6’s) easily.  This difference leads to a major difference in the omega 3/6 ratio of the meat.  For example, grain fed beef can have as high a ratio as 1 omega 3 to 25 omega 6.  Whereas, grass fed beef under low stress conditions will have an omega ratio of  1 omega 3 to 3 omega 6, in fact one of the leading beef producers in the country Ewan Campbell gets his meat tested and his beef has more omega 3 than salmon!  So, as you can see there can be large differences between red meats…How does this effect stroke I hear you say…read on….

Research has shown that an imbalance between omega 6 and omega 3 (too much omega 6) is pro-inflammatory.  Whereas, omega 3 is anti-inflammatory.  Therefore eating grain fed beef causes a lot of inflammation and later on stroke!

So could it be that it’s not the fact that eating red meat that’s the problem but the type of red meat and poor omega 3 to omega 6 ratios?  Sure – by the way wild buffalo have a ratio of 1 to 1 – the way nature intended.


So, what do I do?   I avoid grain fed beef and eat only grass fed low stress beef as a minimum – well that’s easy in New Zealand!  I also recommend that everyone supplement with an omega 3 supplement to help balance their omega3/6 ratios – I recommend Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil Capsules because they retain the natural vitamins A and D whereas other brands take these out and sell them to us as a separate supplement!  Click here to view Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil Capsules.

The best way to rebuild your adrenals….

Many people turn up their nose when I talk about offal…but they are really missing out…I reckon I could serve my Tempura Mountain Oysters and no one would even notice.   This morning a friend dropped off some fresh mountain oysters (testicles for those of you not in the know), so I thought fresh is best and swung into action….here’s what I did…

Tempura Mountain Oysters (testicles)

Take membrane of outside of Mountain Oyster and slice into 7mm slices.

Mix up tempura batter of 1 egg, 1 cup of cold water and 1 cup of gluten free flour (rice, buckwheat, tapioca).

Heat a small pan with some saturated fat (coconut oil, lard, dripping, ghee) and dip the slices of Mountain Oyster into tempura batter and then into the hot oil.  Only do a few at a time, a couple of minutes on each side and then place on a rack to drain while the others are cooking.  Serve with homemade sweet chilli sauce and some fresh crisp lettuce.

Money makes the world go around….

I was thinking…it does not makes sense…

I don’t get it.. the government in New Zealand is going to ban real milk (Raw Milk) while it continues to allow the sale of high sugar drinks to children – that does not make any sense???

But then you think about makes a lot of sense if people found out the truth about pasterised and homogenised milk nobody would want to drink it.   But, then conglomerates like Fonterra would be out of business. So, who’s really behind raw milk getting banned.   It can’t be the health hazards of drinking raw milk – as in Hawkes Bay over 10,000 people drink raw milk every week and yet there is NOT ONE CASE of food poisoning from it’s consumption – and that’s from !

The simple truth is there is too much money being made from perpetuating the myth that milk needs to be pasturised.  Which allows is collection and redistribution to the unknowing public that are consuming it – not knowing that the polyunsaturated fats will be damaged causing mega free radicals, the enzymes used by our body to break down the sugar in milk and calcium in milk is gone!  30% of the protein is gone, glutathione an incredible antioxidant is gone, the beneficial bacteria is gone, most of the B vitamins and vitamin C…gone – you get the idea… what’s left….not a lot!!!
